I just acquired a 24 MB RAM card for my 540c. This is an Apple card and among other things has "520" on the label.
My 540c is clock chipped to 40 MHz with a 20.000 MHz oscillator from DigiKey (part # 300-7040-1-ND). I have had no problems with 8 MB RAM cards but this 24 MB card fails during the RAM check after the boot bong. I get four rising tones and then four disharmonious falling tones, then a dark screen. Reseating the card didn't help. I tried the card in a stock 520c and it works fine. I would prefer not to go back to 33 MHz in the 540c but will if it means that the 24 MB card will work. Were some Apple RAM cards machine specific to the 520 models? Is the problem with the higher clock speed? I'd be interested in hearing from others who have overclocked their 5xx series PowerBooks, as to maximum speed they got without problems.
