The 520, 520c, 540 and 540c all use the same motherboard and RAM. Only
the processor card is different between the '20 and '40. 
Your problem is most likely due to the 24 MB RAM upgrade being too slow. 
Have you tried a 32 MB upgrade?

Too slow because of the overclocked processor? Do you think it will work
at 33 MHz? I guess I could experiment by putting the old oscillator back
or use it to chip the 520c to 33 Mhz and see if the RAM still works.

I've been trying to get a 32 MB card but so far I haven't found one at
my price ;)
