Hmmm, this is the first I've heard of the NewerTech NUPowr 167 needing an extension to run at its full speed. Those that I've had only ever ran at 167mhz, no matter the OS, extensions, type or quantity of ram, etc. I was under the impression the processor speed is set in hardware. I'm not sure what (if anything) the NewerTech CP and extension do for PPC upgrades without L2 cache.
The NUPowr series was available as 117, 133 and 167 with 0MB RAM or with 8MB RAM on the processor card and none of those had an L2 cache. The 183MHz model was the only model with a 128K cache and 24MB onboard RAM allowing a possible maximum of 56MB. I'll again mention my web page about running MacOSes 8.5/6 and 9.1 on PPC upgraded Macs: http://members.aol.com/dankephoto/ppc_upgrade I've been running 9.1 for some time now and it works fine. It feels a bit snappier than 8.6 did, which I atribute to the greater amount of PPC-native code in OS9. The RAM footprint on my 540c with VM enabled is around 15MB, perfectly acceptable for my 40MB PowerBook. Think of it as a faster, better-looking 5300 with less RAM. One more item, I just bought 2 IDE-SCSI adapters for 2.5" ATA HDs and I also just got a 30GB Travelstar . . . yep, I'm gonna max my PPC540c's storage space. No, I have no real need for 30GBs in my old PPC BlackBird, but now I've got the stuff, and I'm gonna use it! : >) Dan K On 6/7/02 [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: > >In a message dated 6/7/02 7:29:20 AM, [EMAIL PROTECTED] writes: > ><< >I'm trying to upgrade my 540c to downdoad mp3 files and run other power mac >applications.
