Actually, if you offered your music for free to begin with, you have ipso facto released it to public domain, which, like the updates, makes it quite legal to distribute. Copyright law is quite clear on this. A better example than what you cite: Films adapted from Shakespeare or any other public domain work do not have to get permission from authors living or dead to be produced and distributed, and pay no royalties.
