Booting from the OS CD you then go to the System Folder on the computer's hard drive and trash the System suitcase and Finder. That makes it no longer a real System Folder and you're sure to get the core OS reinstalled. It's probably the same as the clean install option. You don't have to create a new System Folder and move prefs and things.
