Actually, "clean install" (the button for which sometimes you have to invoke by "magic" depending on the OS version (hold option key down, stuff like that, depending on the OS version) takes your current system folder, renames it "Previous System Folder" and then makes a new "System Folder" into which it puts everything you selected at install time.n At that point you'd have to copy over any custom extensions from the "previous system" to the "system" folder. Certainly don't copy over prefs or extensions _en masse_ if you suspect a problem with something; you'd just recreate it. Copy stuff back in small doses with reboots between, so you have an idea where problems might be (you can do a lot of this without a reinstall just by changing your active extensions anyway. If the extension doesn't get loaded, extension conflicts or bad prefs for that extension won't happen). It's often quicker just to reinstall the OS though. I've never had a problem with the OS components not being installed by just running the installer from the CD (booted from CD) and telling it to install; but perhaps in some situations... I don't think it's often really necessary to move the suitcase or finder though, myself. B -- -- PowerBooks is sponsored by <http://lowendmac.com/> and...
