Better yet, get the right cell phone to begin with.  My Motorola 
StarTAC just needs a serial cable (it is expensive as you noted). 
The modem is built in to the phone.  I've been using it lately and it 
works fairly well, even at 70MPH.  It's limited to 14,400.
