Your 5300 will run like a different machine with OS8 for sure.
If you can get your hands on an Ethernet PC Card you can install 
from another machine with a CDROM.  The SCSI external disk 
might be the cheapest alternative otherwise.  I just finished an 
upgrade on my  5300CS, with a 6GB drive replacement with OS8.6 
and 40 MB Ram...runs like a dream.
