If there are too many phones connected to the same line that can cause problems. Count all the phones devices (including answering machines, cordless phones, caller ID devices, fax machines, other modems, etc) that are all connected to that same phone line. I've been told you should not have more than four devices on one line and that's counting your computer's modem.
