You can get smaller lead-acid batteries pretty cheaply, they are commonly used as backups for burglar alarms. I was thinking along similar lines to Scott, except using two of these smaller batteries: thus I could supply 24 volts straight to the laptop without a Duo car adapter (which I don't have). Two points: lead-acid batteries are only nominally 12 V; they actually supply 13.8 V. SO to ensure I'm not overpowering my lappy, I would want to add a voltage regulator inline. And I would need to un-pair the batteries for charging from a 12V charger - ie in series to feed the lappy, in parallel for charging. I've even found two batteries that fit neatly under the back end of my 1400, lifting the kb up to a jaunty ergonomic angle.
