Hmmm...I have the EXACT same thing wrong w/ my 520c, and I did nothing to my screen. 
It went from working perfectly, then I failed ay putting it in SCSI mode.... then on 
it was just blue-screen whenever on.

 I wonder if this wasn't a b&w

> colour, and maybe even a passive matrix?

Mine is a color passive matrix.
