Ok, I actually did this a while ago, but I just now got around to putting it on my website, so ...
I got MkLinux Pre-R2 installed on my 5300ce. It works. That's about all i can say. With no PC card, expansion bay, audio, or floppy support, there's not much you can do with it besides tool around on the CLI. And somewhere along the way I screwed up my X settings, so until i get that figured out, I can't even get to the CLI (X server now starts at login automatically but gets caught in a loop and won't display. Screen flashes grey, then back to the CLI login, then grey, then login, then grey... I let it sit like this for about 5 minutes before finally giving it the old three-fingered-salute. Anyway, I did it. If you want to take a look at the install directions to see if it's worth it to you (frankly, i doubt it would be worth it to anyone but a 2400/3400/Kanga/G3 owner as earlier models have about zero support), go take a peek at my website. <http://homepage.mac.com/alk/projects/5300/mklinux5300.html> As always, everything between the <> brackets. For me this was more of a "to-see-if-I-can" project than anything else.
