This one is almost laughably easy to fix: delete the TCP/IP prefs from 
the system folder.

(Laughably easy, of course, once you twig to the fact that this is all 
it takes.

I looked like a total idiot faced with this the first time 'Oh, yeah, I 
know macs, I can get yours doing dial-up no problem!' Famous last 
words...8-)
