According to the Machine-status document, <http://www.macbsd.com/macbsd/macbsd-docs/machine-status/>, the on-board video of the PB170 is not supported, so serial-console operation only. :-( The only fully supported PowerBook is the 550C. (Swapping the 68LC040 for a full 68040 results in a fully supported 520, 520C, 540 or 540C.
