It was a semi-functioning 5300cs bought off eBay in a fit of ignorant enthusiasm. The seller listed its defects but also claimed to "know very little about Macs" so I assumed (after years of jollying along a series of yard sale desktop Macs) that getting it going would be no great trick. This cheery assumption was wrong, but the episode taught me a lot, and not at much expense either, especially after I eventually found a Swap Lister who wanted it for parts. The 5300c that replaced it (also eBay) now does everything it's asked -- thanks to lessons learned from the first PB, and also to lots of help from various members of this list.
