I concur with everyone elses opinion. With only 32MB of RAM, I think I might choose 8.1. If you (or he) has the intention of putting some additional RAM in it very soon, then likely 8.6. If your thinking of maxing it out on RAM, then breaking into OS9 is a definate possibility.
It is necessary to use a full installation CD to get all of the necessary extensions for the 3400. However, if you have a Wallstreet recovery CD or something to that effect, it will work just fine. (Thats what I installed 8.6 on mine with - I just had to go download the ethernet/modem extension afterwards before my modem/ethernet combo would work).
