The DNS will be an IP address but when you dial-up, your Mac is also assigned an IP
address too. And you may have listed a gateway or router IP address. So, a DNS is a
"domain name server" and it will have it's own IP address. The web site you visit
"www.apple.com" also have their own IP address which are discovered (resolved) by the
domain name system. You say go to "www.apple.com" and the DNS resolves it's IP and
then you start to load the web page. All this happens quickly, behind the scenes
without you seeing it. When you get on your problem Mac again try MacPing as I
described in my earlier message and you may even try going to apple's website via the
IP number instead of name.

Instead of:

http://www.apple.com/

Try:

http://17.112.152.32/

If using the name doesn't work but using the IP address does, then it's a DNS problem.
If neither works then you have other problems.
