I'd suggest starting up plugged in, sleep it, then run it off battery to see
how long it lasts. My 1400c runs for 30mins - 45 mins on battery, sometimes
longer if I set the screen to b&w, but if I boot it off battery I get about
5-10 minutes. That should tell you if it is the battery or not.

Another thing I did was shut off the startup memory test, hold down the
option+command keys when you open the memory control panel, then shut off
the check box, that is if you are sure the memory is good. It will speed
startup some.

ps, I still am using my original battery (jan 97), battery recond. brought
it back to life. My Sonnet upgrade has helped also.

Oh and take out all pcmcia cards not in use, they will draw power unless you
have that option turned on in teh mem control that will stop power to unused
cards.
