I've done it with both my powerbooks. Did it just today, in fact. The 
problem is when you have mismatched CPU's on the host Mac and the 
Powerbook...I had to reinstall OS8 on my PB540 after I installed the 
PPC version of OS 8 on it ;-)

Updates are particularly pesky... *third* time I reinstalled OS 8 on my 
PB 540 was after I'd successfully re-installed the 68K version of OS 8, 
then slapped on the 8.1 update, again, in SCSI disk mode...:-/

Any time the installer automatically looks to see whether you install 
the PPC version or the 68K version you'll have problems like this. 
Given she was running a 180 I suspect this was the problem.
