>(aside from this list) not generally

This is a false assertion. It IS generally known. Do a google
search and see for yourself. Search for "Low Level Format IDE
drive." Heck, the first hit is from Seagate. I think they know a
thing or two about hard drives.

>If apple knows all this, why is drive setup
>(capable of LLF) still included with new Macs, even though they all use ATA
>drives?

They don't. That's my point. My OS 9.x will NOT allow an LLF of an
IDE hard drive. Nor would my 8.6. I don't know why this is
happening in your setup (yes, I saw the video and believe it's doing
what you say it is), but I'd say it's a fluke.

>If a customer puts a SCSI disk in a new Mac, then it is via a 3rd
>party driver, which presumably can format it's own disk anyway.

What? Apple still supports SCSI on all of it's PCI expandable
computers. What about those G3s and G4s that shipped with Apple
re-branded ultra-wide SCSI cards and disks?

Nonsense. SCSI hard drives don't ship with custom software drivers.
We're talking about OS 9, here, so lets forget about OS X Macs. And,
the last time I checked, OS 9 supported almost everything PowerPC
based (except 9.2.x). And almost every OS 9 capable Mac has a SCSI
bus (excepting the iMac, certain PowerBooks, and late model G3s and
G4s). Drive Setup, under OS 9, is what writes the the "drivers" to
the disk, and generally not custom extensions or formatting tools.
It has been a very long time since Apple required custom ROMs on the
hard drive to be recognized by Drive Setup.

Look, I'm sorry, but this is just FUD. If you shot a gun at your
foot and missed all your toes, you wouldn't tell other people that
it's an ok thing to do.

I still maintain that you should not LLF an IDE hard drive. If you
want to run the risk wrecking your hard drive, then that is your
business.

Completely snowed in here in Denver,
Drew
