My guess is that earlier IDE/ATA drives (that we both recall, that people DID toast, I know people who did just that by mistake) would try and LLF without special manufacturers software. Seems logical that they'd set up the drives to just ignore these commands unless you do have the special manufacturers software. > party tool screws with it's physical formatting. (Some OEMs have > tools to do this - Maxtor, for instance, has a PC tool which > _does_ > LLF a Maxtor hard drive. They can do this because they know how > their hard drives work. Apple cannot do this.) Right. I think perhaps they hid this extra level to keep people from messing with things they ought Not To Mess With (tm). No evidence though for this except: -I'm old enough a vintage to recall when doing a LLF really was death for IDE/ATA, "when ATA/IDE was young" :) It really did happen, kids. -you can now get special tools only from the manufacturer to do a LLF, else the commands seem to get ignored (numerous google articles from non-trusted sources (jim-bob on forums.com doesn't work for me...) -people are using a LLF via a general tool, non-OEM, and newer IDE/ATA drives apparantly aren't dying :) I googled a bit but didn't find anything from a reputable source (like a HD OEM) stating what was going on now (about commands being ignored etc). But only a 'C' college student expects (countries) to be able to prove a negative.... :) I still would be pretty careful with SCSI disk mode/ LLF especially if it's the original, olde, IDE drive in the laptop.
