You can use any media if you can Mac-format it. I use a CF card as VM, but
only for emergencies to keep the OS lit in a memory situation that would
otherwise cause a crash.

Using this type of memory for VM is excrutiatingly SLOWWWWWW, but it will
prevent crashes due to low memory.

You can use an IBM MicroDrive which is faster, but they're VERY touchy,
easily damaged, and not as reliable.

Best recommendation for external VM would be to get a portable, pocket-sized
ATA drive with a PCMCIA adapter connector. Even that will require some
protection while carrying it around.
