I have an allegedly fresh battery but the 1400 won't charge it. I've got two M4896 ac adapters (can't find a revision number -- where should I look?) and the symptom is the same with both. The 1400 will start up with the ac adapter connected but the battery symbol in the menu bar has an x through it and the battery level control strip element is greyed out (OS 8.6, Newer 216 MHz G3, 64MB RAM). I installed a new (used) main logic board acquired off of ebay and the symptoms didn't change. Checking the battery with a multimeter shows some voltage but not enough to start up (9V? -- haven't checked lately...).
