Stephan -- here's how to do it on a 5300, the 3400 may be a bit different. Shut down the computer and unplug the power adapter. Power on from the keyboard, and *immediately* hold down the command, option, "P" and "R" keys. Keep holding all these keys down until you have heard the startup chime at least twice. (In the 5300 it only chimes once, then the screen goes dark and the green sleep light stays unblinkingly on, but I believe the 3400 is different.) Then press the reset button on the back, and the PB should start up. If it doesn't, restart from the keyboard. After the restart is complete, shut down again, using the menu command. Then plug the power cord back in. If the computer stays off, both the PRAM and power manager have been reset and all should be well. If it starts up again spontaneously, reset the power manager. Take out the battery. Unplug the adapter from both the computer and the wall outlet. Press the reset button and hold it down for one full minute. Plug the adapter back into the wall outlet, then into the computer. It should now behave normally.
