That noise could well be your hard drive creaking under the strain of VM. Or it could be impending drive failure ...there how's that for a quandry :-/
If the strange buzzing noise only occurs when the computer is really busy (lots of big memory apps) then it's likely just normal disk activity associated with a lot of VM activity. In this case the 128 mb ram will solve the problem.
If the noise doesn't go away after installing the added memory, then I'd suspect a failing HDD.
