Ok, somehow I've lost the capability for Appletalk on my 1400. I had been rebooting around between 8.6 and 9.1 testing those Quickcam drivers, that's the only thing new.
Now, I cannot point Appletalk at the ethernet slot- either with a 3com589d card or a wirelss card, both of which usually work fine for Appletalk. error has no number, just basically "en error occurred with appletalk , make sure your network settings are correct". I've checked that ethertalk etc extensions are there, trashed related prefs, zapped PRAM, and reinstalled the 9.l update. Are there hidden files related to appletalk? It's weird that both booting into 8.6 and 9.1 are failing. I don't wish to do a clean install of 9.1 from a 1X external CD, but might do so as a last resort.
