The 1400 is PCMCIA. This is NOT Cardbus. Can't do USB on a 1400.

Extending memory? Well, maybe you can use a PCMCIA adapter and a compact 
flash card to be your RAM Disk, but I don't think you gain much. Haven't 
tried it, however.

Do you have an external CD Drive you can use? Maybe an external HD you 
can use as a startup disk? Norton can only do limited repairs to the 
startup disk. Sort of like working on your car's engine while it is 
running.
