Let me wade in here:
Some have used 7.5 extensions with the 7.1 system file
and everything worked;
8.6 and 9.1 can't interchange like this, but there are
exceptions: iTunes meant for 9 works with 8.6.
9.1 takes way longer to boot because of invisible
system libraries (not present in 8.6); 9.1 uses
updated HDD drivers which OS X recognizes - you don't
want to go there, especially with partitioning. If you
must, I suspect the best thing is 9.1 on the first
partition, never on the second, etc. (IMHO, OS9 exists
mainly as a bridge to OS X, hence its recent
resurrection after a premature 'burial' replete with
coffin and undertaker(!), Steve Jobs).

If you meet an installer that demands 9.1, try to
install with 8.6 anyways - Mozilla works (some
versions, don't remember which, and Mozilla has
discontinued support for Classic OS, but earlier
versions are/were available on the Mozilla site).
