Hi,
1. I have a powerbook 5300 and bought a used Global Village 56k pcmcia modem.
When I open the GV icon on the desktop, I can choose a compression type for
the modem: MNP4, V.42, MNP5, V.42bis, MNPIVEC, etc.

Use v.42 bis. The MNP was an early compression standard developed by a particular manufacturer. It was used by some other manufacturers but not widely adopted. v.42bis is the industry wide standard for modem compression.
