I'd recommend using an external CD-ROM to install a new system, after
backing up everything you wanted to save on your desktop hard drive.

Get any G3 upgrade, as that's the only way to give it an L2 cache, and is
well worth it.  Get a 48 MB RAM card for the easiest way to max out the RAM.
