I have to say that your second hand market is somewhat overinflated over there in the US, not to mention the one in England!!
I live in Stockholm, Sweden and I pick up all sorts of decent Macs for peanuts compared to the stupid prices you're talking about.
E.g. 540c, 5300c and a DUO230 all inkl. PSU etc for $90 all 3.
