I think it's a termination and/or term power issue. Did you put a 
passthrough terminator between them?

PB <-> PT-term <-> PB
(PT-term = passthrough terminator)

Also, neither PB supplies termination power and term power is probably 
needed for the passthrough terminator to work. The only way to provide 
term power is to put a device in the chain that does supply the bus with 
term power. That setup might look like this:

PB <-> PT-term <-> device <-> PB

Alternately, there are PT-terms that provide term power, Granite Digital, 
APS and others used to sell 'em, weren't cheap tho as I recall.

The above advice assumes you are using one each 29 pin and 30 pin 
adapters. PB-to-PB docking _can_ be done, you just have to add some more 
stuff.
