I've got a non-backlit Mac Portable that worked as recently as 3 months ago. It has a new battery that I built (PowerSonic battery) which shows 5.35V and the 9V is good at 8.5V.
Unforntuanely it just won't start, nothing, no noise at all. Last time I used it the machine was working flawlessly, I had even used it to do some work thanks to the SCSI->Ethernet adapter I had gotten for it...
