Linda,

    The problem could be the Power Manager, resetting it should cycle every
thing back to normal,  removing the battery is part of this procedure,
since it is dead leave it out.   For directions see the web page:

On some of the earlier power adapters the plastic tip had a tendency to
fracture and short the logic board resulting in a blown fuse inside, check
the adapter for this fault and verify that it has an output with a meter,
If this information doesn't lead to a solution, opening the powerbook
becomes a necessity as the next thing to check is the soldered on fuse on
the logic board next to the battery contacts.
