First, what version of Mac OS are you running?  Have you installed all the
requisite USB system software?

Second, does the USB card seat right?  The card CAN go in just far enough to
be recognized enough to mount, but not enough to fully transmit all the
needed signals.  Recall that there's that little issue of the 'keyed' shape
of the end of the card.  And sometimes there's a little too much of the
plastic overcoat on the outside of the card & it sometimes needs to get
peeled off.  And don't forget that you must eject the card BEFORE you shut
down or restart, or else it won't remount.

Finally, if the card doesn't eject when you drag it to the trash, then
there's a little hole where you can insert an unbent paper clip, much as you
can do to eject a stuck disk.
