Greetings. Thanks for the lead to OS9Helper! I have now successfully installed 9.2.2 on my PowerBook 3400c. Everything appears to be working fine EXCEPT (ironically) the issue I first asked about: I still cannot boot a CD that has an OS 9.2.x system. Of course, as I thought this through, the modification of the system on the HARD DRIVE would have no effect on a CD boot (Duh!). I was most interested in this so I could perform a hard drive defrag using Speed Doctor on Norton SystemWorks 2. I can run DiskDoctor and TechTool from the CD loaded after startup. But you cannot defrag a startup disk. Any work-around? Thanks.
