OS9.2.x is for G3 and newer machines and as you found out, won't install or run on pre-G3 without a workaround such as the one you used. Not sure what the benefits would even be, but I suppose there might be a few. Here's one thing you might try if you have another Mac you can network with. Pop the utility CD into you other Mac and share it. Then boot the 3400 from an OS9.x CD, connect to the other Mac, and mount that CD to the 3400 desktop. Then you should be able to run the desired utility from there. You might also find an external CD-ROM drive to mount the utility CD (again after booting from another CD). Or it might be easier to pick up an earlier utility CD that the 3400 will boot from. OWC has a Norton System works v1.0 for just $9 (bundled with som other stuff). That might be easier than jumping through all the hoops for the above workarounds.
