This is a familiar experience -- not on my PB 190 but on my 7200. The only way I was able to run Disk Doctor and then Optimize my hard drive was to use my OS 8.1 CD as the startup and then run Disk Doctor and Speed Disk from copies I had on a floppy. Now that my second hard drive is in (YAY!!!), I don't have to use the CD and floppy technique anymore; I can just use one hard drive as the startup and "geek" the other drive, then use the newly "geeked" drive as a startup to do the other one. For the PB I'm still stuck with using a floppy as a startup, but the copies of Disk Doctor and Speed Disk on the PB's hard drive will still do the total job of checking and optimizing once started up with the floppy. I've never seen a 3400c, so does it have a floppy drive? If so, I'd suggest doing what I did with the 7200 -- make a copy of Disk Doctor and Speed Disk on a floppy, using your CD as the startup and doing the diagnostic and optimization from the floppy. -- PowerBooks is sponsored by <http://lowendmac.com/> and...
