How many people are able to get a 1400 with an upgrade to work with the
Sonnet extension? What logic board do you have, what upgrade variety
do you have, how much RAM, what OS are you running, and lastly, what
version of the extension. I have 1.4.5, 2.0.1, 2.0.2, and 2.0.3, and
have tried all with no success.

One of my 1400s is running a Sonnet 333 and 64 MB and OS 8.1 or 9.1 with no
problems. I use the Sonnet Processor Upgrade extension ver. 1.4.5. It
might be noted that I also use a single 48 Meg RAM Module to get my 64 MB
and keep VM ON. (I have the NewerTech video board, which doesn't allow
room for stacked RAM. ) BTW: My VERY fat OS still only uses 26.5 MB. (vs
the 34.2 MB used on my primary desktop workstation.)

Both of my 1400s started life as 1400/117cs models. (Some day I'll find a
pair of "c" screens cheap enough to convince me to finish the upgrading.)

I have a NewerTech G3 on my 1400, with the maximum 64 MB of RAM. Does
NewerTech vs. Sonnet make any significant diffin the choice of OS?

YES!!!! The Sonnet wouldn't run with 8.6, but the NewerTech would. Sonnet
is notorious for extension and O.S. conflicts with all of their upgrade
cards from PBs to desktop Macs. (you should see the list of conflicts with
the new Sonnet G3/700-800 cards for the PCI Macs.) My 1400 with a
NewerTech 217 runs fine with 8.1 or 9.1 and stacked 24 MB RAM modules
(total 64 Meg). The OEM Appple Video board installed in this 1400 fits
with stacked RAM.

I use VM on both of my 1400s and though it slows things a bit, it is well
worth it when using memory hog apps. like PhotoShop and Office.

I downloaded (free from Apple.com) the carbonlib 1.6 extension and put it
in the 8.1 extensions folder. I can run all of the programs that I use that
"require 8.5 or higher" under 8.1. I like the 9.1 interface better, but
have to use 8.1 with some older programs that won't run under 9.1.
