I'll add my 2 cents. Ditch the Sonnet extension, use either the PowerLogix
or NuPowr controllers for your G3 card. I have a NewerTech 233mhz G3 card in
my 1400 and a Sonnet 400mhz G3 in my 9500. I've tried all 3 different
drivers in both machines. All drivers seem to control the G3 processor
settings but the NuPowr seems the most stable for the 1400. I've used it
with System 7.5, 8.0, 8.1, 8.5, 8.6 and 9.1. It's been flawless with all
O.S. versions. I'm using the PowerLogix drivers in the 9500 as it was the
easiest to keep the G3 settings while switching between 9 and X.2 on that
machine.

The drivers are available on the Other World Computing site in their Tech
section. They're also the home of the famous XPostFacto OS-X hack/installer.
