I'm willing to upgrade my OS 7.5.5 540c to OS 8 and I'm not sure whether one of those OS 8.x install CDs that came with the G3 macs would work, or should I look for a more specific install set? I have a SCSI external CD drive...
My experience ... Sys/O.S. CDs for PPCs don't work well (if at all) w/ 680x0 machines !!
You would do better w/ a Retail/generic CD that will see the 540c for specific model SW.
A little more $$, but less problem ... usually ...
If you find an OS 8.0 for sale,(don't stop at 8.0) the 8.1 upgrade is free download ...

about 2/3 down the page ...
In alternative, can I just upgrade (for free) to OS 7.6, or would I need to buy that OS as well?
OS 7.6 is not free ... the 7.6.1 upgrade is free for download considerably less RAM needed
Same page as above ...
