>What do people think of the SkyLine software?
I was thinking about adding a comparison of the software and cards to my FAQ. Maybe I'll pick up a SkyLine card at some point and do an Apples-to-Apples comparison. ;-)
Peace, Drew
That would be great if you could do a report and post to your FAQ & here. I would also be intrested if anyone has had the SlyLine card working under OSX (slightly off topic), or a compairson to the MacWireless software. I have been told that MacWireless was formed by former employees of Faralon, the origional developer of the SkyLine card.
I'm using it now on a Wallstreet w/OS X.2.8. I'm using the Source Forge <http://www.versiontracker.com/dyn/moreinfo/macosx/11826> driver.
I have used both the Orinoco and the SkyLine v3.1 software & the SkyLine is much easer to configure that the Orinoco. I have not used the Airport software so no compairson available.
I think I configured the SkyLine card with it's drivers under OS 9.1 on this machine and didn't find it much different than the Orinoco card and drivers I use on a 5300. On the Wallstreet and Kanga I used the Orinoco with Airport s/w.
I helped a friend configure a Orinoco Gold card ($89.00 @ CDW, She did not ask me before she purchased) and it is NOT rock solid reliable. With a clean install of OS 9.1 on a Wallstreet, she must have the card inserted for startup. She still can not get it to see her Belkin wirellss router at home, but I think that is a configuration problem. When ejecting and reinserting the card, computer sees card but refused to connect to my card. Restart and all is well. Connected her laptop to my PB1400 with no problem when I got it working.
I don't recall if I ever had to insert the card after startup much less if it caused a problem. Both the Orinocos and Skylines work fine with both my Belkin and SMC routers. Range is better with the Belkin.
I've used the Orinoco, SkyLine and Airport cards on a 5300, Kanga, Wallstreet (2), Pismo and a couple of G4 laptop. Where it works I prefer to use the Airport software for it's simplicity and compatibility (especially with "stumbler" software).
I use the Orinoco card and software occasionally. I've found it tends to loose the base station from time to time and I have to turn the card off and on to clear it. This is usually after sleeping and I don't know if it's the card, the software or the computer.
As I noted above I only setup the Skyline software on my Wallstreet but I don't use it as I'm always on OS X on that machine. I do prefer the Skyline card as it has a thin profile allowing it to sit under another card with a connector extension. It's also the cheapest by far I've found.
