Have you tried the Open Firmware command ?
It produces a lengthy list of commands. I was hoping
for a command that would reset the Rom(s). Hard to
believe that a physical chip deteriorates over time.
I think this way because I have had no problems
charging either of two Li ion batteries.
(Yes, I forgot to mention that the keyboard can be
erratic, too.) Have you swapped cables (the HDD cable,
etc.)?
