Thanks for the help guys. I now have OS 8.5 installed and running
but the machine is very unstable. It locks up after 10 minutes of
usage. Could this be due to the bad HD or due to the processor
upgrade I did? I put a Wallstreet 292mhz card and new 256mb chip in
the machine. I'm sure this all should be compatible with OS 8.5,
right? This is not a 3rd party processor card--it's an Apple part.

Any ideas?

8.5 is rather stable but I always thought 8.6 ( free download ) was much more so.

Try playing with disk cache settings. Doubling the size made the
Epic 1400 I just got more steady on 8.5 . Also give it a little
but not a lot of virtual memory. say 5 MB or less. If the RAM
memory you put in is good then the hard drive may well be the
problem. I think the small laptop drives live a harder life than
desktop drives. But this is another area where I haven't had much
experience.

I assume the CPU is running OK.

Next time try to describe the conditions of crashing/ freezing. What
progarm was running and what you were doing. If you were running IE
or Netscape dump the cache. Give it more memory al;location in the
GET INFO panel and a bigger cache size in preferences.

that's all I can think of for now. Good Luck,
