I think the AC adapter would get hot even if the computer does not accept
the current, if the adapter is working.  It does sound like the AC adapter
to me - not the solder problem.  Also, my experience with AC adapters on
the 5300 and on the 3400 is that the wire gets a break somewhere and the
adapter then won't work.  I would try the adapter before I wiggle any part
in the computer.  Otherwise you may cause a problem which you don't have
now.
