Oops...didn't mean to do that. Actually, if somebody is interested in a fantastic 9.x machine in a reasonably convenient form factor, there's no better way to get a $5000 Powerbook than to buy Gary's 3400c/240. And, he continued, > I tend to believe that unless it's a Rembrandt or something, a seller > in an eBay auction will not get his/her full value to make the sale. > This may be artificially driving prices down--hence Craig's comment. My perception is a bit different, in spite of (or perhaps because of) my cherried-out 3400c eBay experience: I think eBay may well be the single best indicator of ~real~ (not perceived) value, and rather than driving prices down, it tends to reinforce real value and moderate extremes on both ends. I know that is a fact in vintage drums (my 40+ year avocation), since particular brands/styles/features tend to bring the highest prices--and sometimes even inflated a bit--while less desirable (or perhaps, not-yet-in-vogue items) come at a lower price. I ~know~ that is a fact for "MY" brand of vintage drums, and I'm enjoying it all the way to the (future) bank. > Oh well. I wasn't hot to sell my 3400, just offering up if an > interested buyer was out there. It is a great machine. I will keep it > before I give it away. That's ~exactly~ how I felt about my loaded-to-the-gills 3400c/180, but I realized that it was not gaining value (period) and the money would offset the cost of the very nice Pismo I had bought at a very reasonable price. And, I reasoned, I was probably not going to be needing a 9.x machine anyway (especially a Powerbook with the ever-present battery issues), so I figured that I could collect my $137.50 and cash out, making a buyer ~very~ happy with his purchase (actually, he bought it for his wife, who is tickled pink at the deal)--and we are both happy and satisfied (can't take cash with me to Glory, anyway, and it sure won't endure in the "other place," either). But, I have to tell you: I was disappointed, greatly disappointed. Don't cut off your nose to spite your face, Gary; if it brings reasonable value to let you go where you want to go, and another can reap the benefit of it, thank the Lord and move on. That's advice I had to take from myself. rb -- PowerBooks is sponsored by <http://lowendmac.com/> and...
