36 watts charges the battery; 36 watts runs the machine; 45 watts will do both.
I am not sure about that...
When I am traveling, I take a 3400c and a 2300c; I use the 36w adapter from the 2300c for both.
When I use the 3400c with the 36w adapter, it charges the battery WHILE on. I am testing it now just to be sure...
It depends on just how the power controller functions. One style is to simply charge the battery using the power adapter and connect the computer to the battery. This means that the power adapter is really powering the computer. The problem with this approach is it's hard to controller the charging current to the battery as it depends on the computer load. Another way is to power the computer directly from the power adapter and also run the battery charging circuit off the power adapter. This is a much better way of charging the battery, both to charge the battery in the shortest time and to prolong the life of the battery. But this means that the full load of charging and running the computer are applied to the charger. It's possible the power controller is smart enough to sense the load on the charger and limit the battery charging current if the power adapter is being loaded too much.
I just checked the Apple Knowledge Base and it only mentioned the use of the 25W adapter on a 280c which normally requires the 36W. It says that if you use the 25W it will work but it may end up draining the battery some.
