OS 9 takes ten years to boot, and finder redraws (menus, windows, icons) are definetely noticeably slower. For writing a document in Word 98, OS 9 is overkill.

2300c 9.1 or 8.5.
You guys got there an interesting discussion. As I happen to own two of
these machines and on both of them a different OS (and I let you guess which
ones). I was curious to see what are the differences as I far as I can see.
The only thing I must admit is the fact that the 9.1 machine has 48 mb of
ram and a 10 gig 4200 rpm HD wheras the 8.5 machine must do with only 28 mb
ram the standard harddisk of 750 mb.
There is no doubt for me that the 9.1 is much faster.(but I remember when
not having 48mb it was much slower. When opening system profiler on both
machines at the same time, 9.1 is twice as fast as 8.5.
Everything(opening windows, scrolling etc.) looks more crispy and faster on
the 9.1. And sure it is the ram and hd also,
but Dan suggestion was to configure like my machine. And then the result is
there.
I know you critics will say , yes but you have more ram. True , but the 9.1
machine has also an 8.5 sytem on another partition, So I rebooted 9.1 into
8.5.
to see what happened.
And frankly I must say I dont see much difference between 9.1 and 8.6 on
the same machine. If anybody knows a good bench I am willing to do some
more tests.
As for my opinion, if one upgrades to the maximum ram and a faster disk ,9.1
is really workable, unless you want to run heavy photoshop etc. The avantage
of 9.1 is the more advanced system, and applications that demand a minimum
of 9.1 can run then.
