Dale,

I sincerely doubt that Mozilla will even launch on your PB1400 due to lack of RAM. It may, but it will be very slow and will cause a lot of paging. It is free, though, so it is definitely worth a try. The best build is probably WamCom (Web And Mail Communicator), which was a special build of a later release of Mozilla designed to work on older Macs. Please note that Mozilla is a little slow on older hardware as it is quite a complex application.

Other browsers are iCab - fast, small amount of RAM required, but pretty ugly at rendering pages. I also think you should investigate the text only web browsing option. Most web images are not really necessary when browsing news sites, etc. WannaBe (text browser) is here: http://mindstory.com/wb2/download.html

Also, do you know if your PowerBook has any extra RAM in it, or have you never upgraded it from the default amount? I would recommend perhaps adding some additional RAM. On eBay you can get an extra 8MB chip for $8.99 shipped. The same seller has multiple for sale with an extra one only adding $4.99 to the cost. An extra 16MB of RAM would probably really open up your machine a little, giving it some room to breathe. You could then comfortably set virtual memory to 64MB. The PB1400 supports up to 64 MB of RAM (you can add two 24MB cards one atop the other, but they cost a fair bit), but any extra over the current amount you have would be a good idea.

I hope this helps. You can check out my PowerBook 1400 FAQ at: http://www.freshfiltered.com/MacFAQ/PB1400FAQ.html

Kind Regards,

Grant Baxter
