1. On both computers OS 7.6.1 is the main operating system.
2. On separate flash disks, I have installed OS 8.1, 8.6. They can be used as boot disks and reduce the battery drain caused by the spinning internal hard drive. Some programs are OS sensitive and call for a specific OS.
3. The flash disks can be used for storage of data or additional applications
Again, I use them for different OSs, data, and applications4. I also have Type III Viper 340MB HDs (available in different MB sizes at an especially attractive price) that plug into the PCMCIA slot (both slots are used). The HDs are a power drain but useful for short periods or when the adapter is plugged in..
You might have better results with a later OS.

If the filename has .bin at the end of it you have to use StuffIt ExpanderWell, I found a copy of Stuffit5.5, which Allume says will run on 7.5.2. However, it's a .sit file, which the web says is yet another compressed format, so I still can't do anything. Also, apparently most mailers silently convert binaries to .hqx, which is a binhex format. If I can read that, I haven't found any way yet. I don't have any browser, much less IE, on the 190.
to decode the files. I can send it to you if you don't have it.
I eventually found out that the previous owner had selected the double-click operation to silently start the "recommended application". When I selected the "ask user"option, it turns out that Acrobat Reader was the only system-recommended application for anything not recognized. I still don't know how to change the application association -- even if I had an application that would do the job :-(.
